September 8th, the Festival of Santa di Nioli is celebrated in the small
mountain village of Casamaccioli, with a procession and a fair. The men
seize the opportunity to enjoy a glass of pastis and practice an ancient
Corsican tradition: improvised call-and-respond singing, or Chjama č
rispondi. Click on file 1 to listen to the men in the pictures.
The men also join together in harmonious polyphonic
singing, the traditional Chants polyphoniques. They usually hold a
hand against one ear to be able to blend their own voices with their
neighbours'. Click on file 2 to listen to polyphonic singing.
I made these recordings on September 8th 2000. Many
thanks to the singers! |
