If you're in the area, please join me at the Art Fair Ootmarsum on Saturday August 28th and Sunday August 29th 2010. It's one of the biggest art fairs in The Netherlands, and Ootmarsum is really nice for a weekend out. Contact me for more information or visit www.kunstinootmarsum.nl.

Digital, schmigital. Looking back over the past year or so, every picture that I took that has any meaning to me, was shot on film with either the Hasselblad 501CM medium format or the Toyo 45CF large format camera, or even the Pentax Super A 35 mm camera (Camera of the Year 1983, ahem). Yes, I'm revisiting the analog world of film and I'm loving it. I've tried all sorts of films, positive and negative, but I've grown quite fond of Kodak Portra 160nc, a classic film among wedding photographers (which I'm not), but I also like it a lot for landscape because of its wide dynamic range and subtle pastel colours. Have a look at the new 6x6 gallery.

July 2009

I've always been a colour guy, but lately I find myself rediscovering black-and-white photography. The timelessness of the structures, patterns and tonalities of a nice black-and-white is quite irresistible. But rather than shooting black-and-white film, I shoot colour film (Fujichrome Velvia and Astia on the 4x5" large format Toyo and the 6x6 Hasselblad) and I convert the scans (or digital files from the Canon 450D) digitally. This gives me more control over tonalities and has the added advantage of having both a colour and a black-and-white version of the same image. So click on the new category black-white in the navigation bar on he left. You'll find black-and-white versions of large format images that you may have seen earlier in the large format section, and also some new large format images. You might also want to check out the commissioned series of images of local art works in the art cycling tour section.

Last year we bought some persimmon fruit (also known as kaki fruit) on a market in Portugal. It's delicious once it's very ripe, so ripe in fact that it falls apart - it's a bit messy. I took a picture of it, which was nominated in the Still Life category of the International Color Awards/Photography Masters Cup 2009.

Art Cycling Tour

This beautifully printed booklet describes a cycling tour which guides you past several sculptures and other art works in the villages of our municipality. I was asked to photograph the art works. I decided to do the series in black and white (apart from the cover, above), in order to give coherence and uniformity to the series. So please enjoy the images which I've brought together on the index page, and let me know when you're in the area to take the tour.

May 2009

Yes, I know, it's been too quiet here. I'm sorry! But that doesn't mean nothing's happening, au contraire mes amis. I've had four exhibitions, I've co-founded a collective of photo-enthusiasts, I've got my own spot on flickr,  I'm teaching digital workflow at the Fotoschool in Groningen, I'm actually (yes, patience please) re-designing this website. So please stay tuned, I will be uploading new pictures, hopefully within the near future, of Portugal and the Czech Republic. I've also rediscovered black-and-white.

The collective we've founded is called LuciX and we have our own website: www.lucix.nl

Meanwhile, please feel free to drop by at my flickr-spot, where I've uploaded new black-and-white stuff, which I hope you'll enjoy:

And oh yes, I bought a Hasselblad on eBay. Film isn't dead (it just smells funny). Please drool here:

This image of a living statue that I took last year in Prague, Czech Republic, came in third in the Performing Arts category of the annual French photography contest Px3 - Prix de la Photographie Paris. Click here for the winners presentation, and here for the Px3 website.

The large format series Hidden Land that I made with a 4x5" view camera about the province of Groningen, The Netherlands where I live, received a Merit Award in the World in Focus contest, Open Series category, from the American trade publication Photo District News. Click here for an online winners presentation, and here for PDN's website.

The group exhibition in the church of Hornhuizen was a great experience, I've talked to so many colleagues and visitors - simply wonderful. Thanks to everybody who voted for my series of large format images - I was presented with the Best of Show Award. Hopefully, see you at the next edition of the Noorderlicht photo festival!

October 1st 2007

The show in the Reformed Church on September 8th and 9th was a lot of fun and a big success. Thanks to all visitors! There's another chance to see the large format series Hidden land in the church of Hornhuizen, also in our province of Groningen, in the north of Holland, on Saturday October 6th and Sunday October 7th. Opening hours will be from 10 am until 6 pm on both days. This will be a group exhibition; drop me a line if you're in the area and would like to attend. I'd be happy to welcome you personally.

August 20th 2007

If you're in the area on September 8th and September 9th 2007, I'd like to welcome you to my new exhibition in the Reformed Church of Thesinge, in the North of Holland. The exhibition is part of the local Art & Heritage Tour. I'll be showing five large prints of images made with a 4x5" large format view camera, a series entitled Hidden Land. Because of its high resolution, large format photography is something that you can't experience through a website, so please come and have a look! Click here for more information about large format photography. I'll be there to welcome you on both days, from 10 am until 5 pm.

The Art & Heritage tour features a group exhibition in the nearby town of Ten Boer, where I'll be showing two large prints of winter images I took with a Pentax 67II medium format camera. Please don't hesitate to contact me for more information if you'd like to visit the exhibitions!

June 1st 2007

I was invited to participate in a local group exhibition with fellow artists from our municipality, in our town hall in Ten Boer, in the north of Holland. Drop me a line when you're in the area and you'd like to visit the exhibition; the show runs until September 28th. There are large prints of images from the province of Groningen where I live and from Brittany, France. Many thanks to our mayor ms. Rika Pot for her enthusiastic introduction at the opening, quite a festive event!

May 29th 2007

I've added two 4x5" large format images - click on Large Format in the left navigation panel. Large format photography comes into its own on a beautiful print, there's actually not much point in shooting large format for a website. Click here for more information on large format photography. So watch this space for news on my upcoming exhibition in September, in the Reformed Church of Thesinge, in the north of Holland. I'll be showing at least five large prints from the series Hidden Land, the province of Groningen, Holland in the early morning fog.

March 15th 2007

In October 2006 I published an article on Michael Reichmann's Luminous Landscape website, about the use of Gamutvision to check profiles for the HP Designjet 130 that I made with PrintFIX Pro. I wrote a sequel, in which I compare various third-party profiles with a standard 'canned' profile from HP. It's an interesting read for those of us who are looking for answers to the question: How do I persuade my printer to print colours as I see them on my monitor? The article is called Fancy Graphics Galore Part II: The Prettiest Print and Profile Pageant 2007. You'll find it by clicking this link.

December 5th 2006

Dutch outdoor magazine Grasduinen has published a five-page article with my pictures and an interview about the beauty of the province of Groningen in the north of Holland where I live. I was asked to give one of their editors a guided tour of the province; we spent a very agreeable day together.

They also invited me to participate in judging the entries in their readers' competition. That information is also online (in Dutch, however); click on this link.

As a service for readers of the magazine, I will host two workshops on March 10th and March 24th of 2007 at the ideally suited Castle Groeneveld in Baarn, The Netherlands. So if you're in the area by then, contact me for more information about the workshops - maybe there's still a place left for you!

November 22nd 2006

A new gallery, this time with pictures from Austria. Fine winter imagery from the Alps, sunny mountain views and a lot of snow. But also a large panorama and a series of traditional Austrian decorative wall art. Shot with various cameras, but that doesn't show on website display - I used a Mamiya 645 Pro, a Pentax 67ii and a Canon Powershot Pro1. Click on Austria in the navigation bar to the left. Enjoy!

November 11th 2006

I've added six images of autumn colours, not in the Autumn gallery but in the Motion gallery. They're studies into the possibilities of capturing only the colours and feel of an autumn forest, without showing details. Please click on Motion in the frame to the left.

October 14th 2006

For those of you interested in color management, I've published an article on Michael Reichmann's Luminous Landscape website about the use of Gamutvision to check the quality of printing profiles that I made with PrintFIX Pro for my HP Designjet 130 printer. If you've read this far, click here for the article.

September 27nd 2006

I've added two indexpages with new pictures of France, from the Alpes de Haute Provence. A couple of composite panoramic images, quite a few butterflies and flowers and even a self-portrait. Click on France in the navigation bar to the left. Enjoy!

September 22nd 2006

Lately I've learned that in my landscape photography, the landscape itself presents me with a choice of two options. Either I record the landscape in the minutest detail, or I leave out as much detail as I can. For the first option I now use a 4x5" view camera, for the second option I move a small digital camera about while I'm taking pictures, without focussing. You can read more about it here. The concept is illustrated with new pictures, under the buttons Large format and Motion in the navigation frame to the left. Don't hesitate to send me your feedback in an e-mail to gerard@kingma.nu. Large format photography really looks best when printed large, for instance at 24" x 28" (60 x 70 cm). So watch this space for upcoming exhibitions, but in the meantime, you can order prints through this website by clicking here! Enjoy.

June 1st 2006

In April we went to the Bahama's, a trip that I'd won in the Travel Photographer of the Year-contest. It was great, we did a lot of diving, walked the streets of Nassau, enjoyed the delicious food and most of all the hospitality of the Bahamian people.

Click on the button 'Bahamas' in the navigation bar to the left. There are five index pages; the underwater images are on the last page. Click the thumbnails to enlarge, and return to the index pages by clicking on 'Index'. All pictures above water were made with a Canon Powershot Pro1, all underwater photography was done with a Canon Powershot S70 with underwater housing WP-DC40. Enjoy!

May 5th 2006

The May issue of Dutch magazine for photography and imaging Focus features an interview with me (in a series about twelve professional Dutch travel photographers), about the technique that I use to compose hi-res panoramas from numerous images taken with a relatively run-of-the-mill digital camera. You can read more about this technique in the notes to the panorama of the Pink Granite Coast in the gallery of pictures from Brittany on this website, or click on this link. Many thanks to the editors of Focus!

January 11th 2006

Finally, new images! A bit different from what you're used to on this website, a bit of an experiment. It's about whether or not it's possible to takes pictures of memories. Click on Memories in the navigation frame to the left; the index page also contains a link to an introductory text.

The images were presented as a collage on my latest exhibition, see the pictures below for November 28th. Enjoy!

December 6th 2005

The image of the jumping lamb on the entry page to this website has won me a trip for two to the Bahama's (the lamb can't come with us). It's the first prize in the Single Image category, theme 'A Single Moment of Freedom', of the Travel Photographer of the Year 2005 competition (click here for the competition).

Super! Many thanks to TPOTY and the jury!

The workshop that I hosted last Saturday was a great success - there was a lot of energy and enthusiasm among the participants, the catering was great and the weather was absolutely perfect. Thanks to all of you who contributed to make it work! Watch this space for more information on the upcoming exhibition.

September 12th 2005

Many, many thanks to everybody who visited my exhibition - we've had about 150 - 200 visitors, not counting the touring bus with thirty-odd French speaking Canadians that took a wrong turn, ended up on our doorstep and had a lovely afternoon after all.

I'm hosting a workshop on autumn photography at the same location (a second chance to visit the exhibition!) on Saturday October 15th 2005. If you're in the area, it would be well worth your while to join us. Please send an e-mail to gerard@kingma.nu for more information. Limited to 12 participants!

"Blaadje" is an annual publication that shows you what's what and who's who in the Dutch magazine industry. There's a contest for the best photography that's been published in consumer magazines the previous year. My picture of the Jumping lamb, published in Dutch outdoor magazine Grasduinen in April 2004, was awarded a second prize in the Landscape category. Much obliged!

The winning entries are exhibited at the Fotofestival Naarden - the biggest event in Dutch photography - from May 14th to June 12th. Have a look at http://www.made-in-holland.nl for more info.

January 29th 2005

At www.fotoveilingazie.nl you can bid on prints by renowned Dutch photographers; the proceeds will be donated to the joint Dutch relief organisations to help the victims of the tsunami disaster in Asia, and you get to own a great print by a top-notch photographer. Prints will be on auction until Februari 11th. The print of the Jumping lamb that I submitted was auctioned for € 311,-- (US$ 404,-). A great success! Many thanks!

January 7th 2005

A happy new year - does that mean anything to anybody right now? I wondered if I could contribute in one way or another as a photographer to help the victims of the tsunami disaster in Asia. So I've donated a 12"x18" print of the Jumping lamb which will be auctioned through an eBay-supported dedicated photography website at www.fotoveilingazie.nl, where prints by noted Dutch photographers such as Corbino and Erwin Olaf will be auctioned. So here's your chance to contribute to the relief effort and maybe get your hands on a great print! The auction will start on Monday January 10th at 18:00 (GMT+1). The proceeds will go to Giro 555 of the joint Dutch relief organisations. Let the bidding begin!

December 15th 2004

I've finally posted the pictures I took in Brittany, France during the summer months of 2003 and 2004. There's lots to see, menhirs of course, but also the lovely Pink Granite Coast, colourful sunsets, traditional seaweed gathering, crabs and wall-to-wall panoramas. Most pictures are scanned medium format slides that I shot on Fujichrome Velvia with my Mamiya 645 Pro, but there are also digital images captured with a Canon Powershot Pro1. There are three index pages - have a look! Please click on Brittany in the navigation bar to the left. Enjoy!

October 26th 2004

I've posted a selection of the set of picture postcards the municipality of Ten Boer, The Netherlands asked me to produce for the promotion of the local Art & Heritage Tour. Please click on Ten Boer in the navigation bar to the left. Enjoy!

September 13th 2004

The exhibition is closed - Thanks everyone!

Thanks to master craftsman Piet Huisman

On Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 September these five landscape images of the province of Groningen where I live were on display in the Reformed Church of Thesinge, The Netherlands.

Thesinge - Reformed Church

The prints were produced by [s]color of Amsterdam, on a Durst Lambda printer on RA4-paper, size 28" x 40" ( 70 x 100 cm). They are layered between aluminium and perspex, without frame. You've never seen anything like it!

The exhibition was part of the local Art & Heritage Tour, for the promotion of local artists and the preservation of monuments and listed buildings. The municipality asked me to produce a set of 40 picture postcards of works by these artists and buildings.

April 2004

Dutch outdoor magazine Grasduinen has kindly elected me their Photographer of the Month. Much obliged!

Enjoy, and thanks for your visit!
